A while ago I signed up for Substack because I really had nothing better to do at the time and there were some interesting people writing about areas I enjoyed. Since then, I kicked around the idea of writing for the sake of writing something. Of course, what to write about, what would keep me coming back over and over to throw my voice out into the Void?
In the latter half of 2024, I chanced upon a review of Peter Brown’s intellectual autobiography, “Journeys of the Mind” and immediately became fascinated with the Late Antique period. I hate hyperbole more than anything in the Universe, but without sounding hyperbolic, his book changed my life. It was the first time in many years, if ever, that I slowed down to enjoy reading every work and every page and deeply regretted having to turn the final one. My only regret was that I didn’t read it 30 years ago when I was in high school. I am confident I would have studied Classics and Religion as a result.
Regardless, I have made it my focus of study for the past few months and wish to share my amateur thoughts with everyone. Correct me if I’m wrong, congratulate me if something sticks, or chastise me if I wait too long between posts. Expect a combination of book & article reviews, interesting things I found that I wish to share, and more thought out pieces on subtopics I have recently dug into.
